From schuy@jewellgems.com Thu Sep 14 03:28:57 2006 From: schuy@jewellgems.com (Schuy Jewell) Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2006 21:28:57 -0500 Subject: [Sloop Scoop 2006] #6, September 14--27 Message-ID: <6.1.0.6.2.20060913211159.026cb838@pop.jewellgems.com> We got in a couple of weekday evening sails, including a stunning full moon sail last Thursday night. I let go of the tiller and the Sloop sailed herself most of the evening along the moonglade: first east then west then east then west. It was one of the nights you have a sailboat for. We only got in one sail over the Labor Day weekend, and it too was pretty perfect. Monday's winds and waves were sailable but the "chance of waterspouts" spooked me to cancel, especially after doing NOAAs hazardours weather online review course on waterspouts. It's hard to remember those perfect days amidst this block of nor'easters, thunderstorms, and gray, soaking rains. Hopefully this evening and this weekend we can remember that summer happened and that fall is a beautiful season. As I get towards the end of the season I do less planning and more jumping on opportunity. I'll schedule a few sails, but let me know if you are one of those people who can go sailing with only a few hours notice and you may end up on one of our impromptu sails. The tentative plan is to drop the mast on the weekend of October 7/8, so there's not much sailing time left. The fall light and sunsets are phenomenal. It's really one of my favorite times to sail. So grab a jacket and some long pants and join us soon. General information (what to do and bring) and directions to the harbor (long-winded but interesting and accurate) can be found on the Sloop Scoop site at http://www.jewellgems.com/sloopscoop/index.htm Hope to see you on the water this season! He left around 0800 hours and Gordon joined me a half hour later and we headed out on the lake until noon. It was wonderful having someone on board who loves trim sails and kept tweaking the lines until the Sloop would go as fast as she could go. The Sloop loved the extra attention. Saturday was alternately wonderful, with strong breezes from the south and Laura the Vangpire and Thomas got some practice with helming and crewing in heavy air. Laura had a great run on the helm--you could feel the boat in a wonderful groove in the water, and the music of the wake of the boat at 6 knots was a treat. I tell you again: fall sailing is the best sailing there is. After the sail Laura and I went to the commodore's cup party at the yacht club. Laura blessed the crowd with keyboards, vocals and life, and I spent most of the evening on the mike, dancing, and otherwise impromptu entertainment. It was an open mike with a keyboard player and we covered Gershwin, the 60s, the 70s, gospel music, folk music, rock and disco (first time I've ever had a mike for "I will survive"). I haven't had that much fun in so long, and it felt great to be performing again. It took a while for me to come down enough to go to sleep. (And for those who may be wondering, the only thing Laura and I had to drink was water.) This week looks pretty breezy with a possible window of sailability on Wednesday night. I'm open to trying to sail Friday during the day, Friday night and/or both weekend days to catch whatever good conditions we can. We'll have one weekend and then part of a weekend after that; most likely the mast will come down on the 8th or late on the 7th of October. For those free for last minute plans, we'll be sailing tomorrow (Sunday, October 1) at noon. I hope to get out either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, and we have a tentative mast dropping date a little early--Thursday or Friday. Next weekend sounds warm, at least, and I'd rather do some sailing, but we may need to use that good weather to get up the river so we don't get stuck having to get out by the 15th and doing the river trip in 5 foot waves and 40 degrees. We'll see. I'll try to give a clearer end of week plan later in the week. I just wanted people to know about tomorrow now.
